St. Louis

The Lewis and Clark expedition returned after about 2 years, to St. Louis. This expedition was one of the most important journeys of exploration throughout the history. They all came back home safe except for one man who died shortly after the journey started. This successful expedition really interested people in the new gain land- Louisiana. It established good relations with the Indians and the journals and records that Lewis and Clark kept throughout their long journey was a useful tool later when needed information on plants and animals came up, as well as weather and topographical questions were asked.

Oregon

They spent their summer at Fort Clatsop in Clatsop county Oregon. It was about 1805-1806 and it was a busy winter, throughout that winter they made new clothes, repaired their weapons and worked on updating all their journals and records. It’s the also the winter were just a bit after restarting the expedition and starting to head back home that they had to say their goodbyes to their dear friends Sacagawea, her husband Charbonneau and their young son Baptiste, who had been such an necessary help throughout their great expedition, it was a sad an emotional moment Lewis and Clark new that their expedition was coming to an end.

Montana

Near the southwestern part of Montana, sometime around August, Lewis and Clark met the first Indians with their horses. So they decided to go to the camp. As they reached the Indian camp Sacagawea discovered that the head chief of the tribe was her brother –Cameahwait. Lewis and Clark bought nine horses and a mule and made sure they had a guide to take them through the Lemhi pass into the territory of the flathead or Salish Indians. It was a significant thing for them to finally meet Indians, and thanks to Sacagawea who was with them they understand and dialect with them.

Missouri

In the first part of June, Lewis and Clark and their companions got to the point in the expedition where Missouri seemed to divide. They weren’t sure of which of the two channels in front of them was the right one. Clark and five men followed the stream to the left while Lewis and six men explored the channel to the right. After walking and looking around a few miles upstream, Clark decided that the stream on the left was sure that it was the way to go to the Missouri area. So he went back to the group and told the group, everyone decided to go in that direction.

Washington DC

Napoleon puts Louisiana for sale in 1803.Jefferson was ready to buy it already in 1792, Jefferson had already started his quest to map and explore the lands west of St. Louis, so he decides to ask Lewis his secretary of states to go and travel around and make maps and new discoveries. Lewis picked as commander of expedition. Writes to ask William Clark to join him and share command. Clark accepts. So from Washington Dc they start to travel to Louisiana, French territory. It was significant because its how the Lewis and Clark's expedition started. This was the beginning of an adventurous and helpful expedition to the United States.

Mandan, North Dakota

By the end of October 1804, Lewis and Clark reached to the he present city of Mandan, North Dakota. There they decided to stay and get ready for the harsh winter that was coming. They spent the winter there getting everything ready for the spring departure for when it was time. One of the most fortunate things that happened was that winter was that they met Sacagawea, who was an Indian from the Lemhi tribe. She was a great contribution to the expedition, she served as an interpreter and guide, cared for the sick and taught them how to survive in hostile country. She was a great help an addition to the journey.
